Frequently Asked Questions
- How is Quantum Speed different than Power Skating?
QUANTUM SPEED is a process-based program built upon a system of exercises and drills designed to quickly combine correct skating technique with skating power to result in skating speed. Anyone who understands progressions, growth and development, and the way a system works will tell you that you cannot remove one part of a system out of the whole and expect maximum results. QUANTUM SPEED, like any system, is designed for efficiency.
- How does it work? And Why?
QUANTUM SPEED works because it is a logical and practical system of 'training to skate.' It is a known fact that in order to improve at anything, one needs to practice correctly. We see players skate around fast making all the same mistakes over and over again so that practice has made these mistakes permanent. In a QUANTUM SPEED process every detail of skating technique is covered so that when power is added, proper biomechanics of the INDIVIDUAL are enhanced, and speed is the result.
- Who has successfully used the Quantum Speed Process?
Thousands of hockey and ringette players have used the process over the years. The Q3 Process has been successfully hosted in Edmonton, AB, Kitchener/Waterloo, ON, Denver, CO, Aspen, CO, Vernon, BC, Kelowna, BC, Grande Prairie, AB, Kamloops, BC, Campbell River, BC, Prince Rupert, BC, and Vancouver, BC. Names and numbers of people who have participated and achieved outstanding results are available by contacting info@quantumspeed.ca.
- Who designed this program and why?
This process was designed by Steffany Hanlen. After years of teaching skating skills she determined that better results were achieved when a simple formula was presented to the players in a way that made sense TO THEM based on what THEY NEED. Common weaknesses were not just "foot speed" or "the first two steps" but the individual's inability to coordinate the various functions of technique, force transfer and quickness. Steffany created the T+P=S system to address these issues, so that all aspects of skating are addressed as a part of a system that can be adapted easily by players to game situations.
- What is the difference between the Spring and Summer session?
The Spring and Summer Q3 programs are the same. Please decide on either the Spring or Summer program based on the schedule that works best for your family.
- What will my results be?
As a player you can expect to gain up to a 30% increase in full out speed, based on pre and post testing, conducted by Steffany Hanlen between 2000 and 2003. You can expect to have better balance and agility as well as be stronger on your skates.
You will skate more efficiently and effectively and will look better to the coaches and scouts watching you from the stands. Everyone is different and based on your commitment to yourself, and to your improvement, you will get much more than you can even imagine.
- Why aren't Quantum Speed Spring / Summer camps available for younger players?
The Quantum Speed program is built on the fundamental assumption that Technique + Power = Speed (T+P=S). While this assumption applies to all age levels, the tips, tricks, strength exercises, and explanations require a certain basis of skill level, strength and understanding. We believe that younger players require REPETITION first and foremost. The basics must be taught, and then repeated for best results. When this fundamental basis is established, then "Skatrix" can be added to maximize speed. After 25 years of instruction, we have concluded that generally, a first year bantam player has the skill level and the level of understanding required to get the most out of the Quantum Speed spring and summer programs.
- Why are the sessions spread out over two - three months?
Through our 25 years of experience with high-end athletes and research on periodization and growth and development, we believe that spreading the program out over three months allows players to experience REAL results and to integrate the changes into their bodies so that these results are LASTING.
- Can ringette players attend the Q3 Skating Program?
Yes! Quantum Speed's Q3 Program is very effective for ringette players and applies directly to their game. Please click HERE to find the appropriate age group for your daughter.
- Is it important that the sessions are completed in order?
Yes. The Q3 program is progressive and is designed using the principles of biomechanics and growth and development. Technique + Power = Speed
- How long are the players at the rink each day?
Players are at the rink for approximately three hours per day. They will have an on-ice session every day along with either an off-ice session or a mental training session.
- What is the difference between the programs that your instructors teach through associations during the Winter Season, and your Signature Q3 Spring and Summer Programs?
Winter programs are designed to be similar to traditional power skating.
These programs support our philosophy that at the younger age groups, quality repetition and exceptional instructor feedback are the foundation to strong skating skills. They are subsidized by not-for-profit Associations and Clubs so that the costs remain low and programs are financially accessible. These programs are instructed by qualified Quantum Speed instructors, but do not include the Signature Quantum Speed Skills and Drills that are instructed in the Spring and Summer Q3 Program.
