The South Side
Athletic Club Bantam AAA team is coming off quite a 2012/13 and they're looking
for their fourth straight provincial championship in 2013/14.
With the departure
of first overall Western Hockey League draft pick Tyler Benson – who has moved
to Kelowna, B.C.'s Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy – you might think the
Edmonton SSAC Southgate Lions Bantam AAA team would take at least a season or
two to retool—but that doesn't seem to be the case.
"We're a very
deep team; it's going to be hard to make cuts here, this weekend [at
tryouts]," said Danny Estephan, team director. "We're looking to
four-peat this year [at provincials]."
Estephan says the
team will feature several returnees, including Joshua Paterson, James Hamblin,
Jayden Pannu, and Ryan Anderson, among others—and some fresh faces will also
provide a boost.
"[Josh] Paterson will be on the WHL radar for sure, he's looking really
great," said Estephan. "There's a couple kids that came into the club
this year that look really good. We have a lot of depth up front and a lot of
regarded as one of the top '99-born players in Western Canada. Guys like
Paterson will be looked at to make a big impact, as opposing Bantam teams will
be eager to knock-off the defending champs.
The Southgate Lions have a few big tournaments on tap, this season, including
an annual trip to the prestigious Medicine Hat and St. Albert Bantam tourneys.
