Despite a hard-fought battle on the ice, the Russian National Junior Team skated away with the win at this year’s Subway Super Series, with a 3-2-1 record and 10-8 margin in points over the CHL (Canadian Hockey League). The CHL contingent consisted of five elite teams from the WHL, OHL (Ontario Hockey League) and QMJHL (Quebec Major Junior Hockey League), which competed against the Russians for six games, in three different provinces, over 10 days, with the puck dropping Nov. 5 in Blainville-Boisbriand, Que., and final bragging rights awarded Nov. 15 in Victoria, B.C.
This year’s victory marks the second series win for the Russians, who last claimed the series in 2010, before moving on to win the gold medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. According to the official event website, the 2012 Subway Super Series “had tremendous attendance with sell-out crowds in four markets.” Fifty-seven 2012 NHL draft picks, including 20 first-round selections, competed in this year’s series, which is being used as part of evaluations for the National Junior Team roster that will represent Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship in Ufa, Russia, this December.
